Suspicious fire leaves 7 homeless

May 26, 2009 8:48:55 AM PDT
A suspicious second-alarm fire burned through two multi-family homes in Mount Vernon Tuesday morning. The fire started in an abandoned house on Union Avenue just before 6:30 a.m. and quickly jumped to an occupied home.

Firefighters banged on the door of the occupied home to get people out. Seven residents were left homeless by the flames.

One resident and one firefighter were treated at Mount Vernon Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

It took more than two hours to put out the flames.

The fire is suspicious and the cause is under investigation. Residents told firefighters the blaze started in an abandoned house that squatters sometimes use.
