Prosecutors in NJ seek to jail Williams

NEWARK The Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office filed the request Wednesday. Prosecutors cited /*Jayson Williams*/' arrest over the Memorial Day weekend in North Carolina on an assault charge as the reason to put Williams behind bars.

The 41-year-old former NBA star has been free on bail since the 2002 killing of Costas Christofi, despite being convicted in 2004 of covering up the slaying. Sentencing has been delayed pending Williams' retrial on a reckless manslaughter count.

Defense attorneys are seeking to overturn the cover-up conviction on grounds of racial bias.
