55 whales dead in South Africa

Authorities are hauling away the carcasses of 55 false killer whales after a mass stranding on a South African beach turned tragic. Police shot 44 of the exhausted whales to end their suffering.

The rest died of stress and organ failure. Emotions ran high on the beach, where locals hoping to save the mammals scuffled with police.

The whales started beaching early yesterday morning. Hundreds of people pushed them back to sea, but the whales kept swimming back to the beach.

Authorities briefly considered transporting the animals to a nearby naval base, but decided the whales were too weak to survive the journey.

Authorities are now warning surfers to be careful of great white sharks circling the waters in search of more bodies.
