Fire breaks out at Midtown hotel

MIDTOWN Eyewitness News is told the fire broke out inside the Times Square Hotel, on West 43rd Street, just after 9 a.m.

Officials say it was initially reported as an explosion inside the building.

But the fire, on the first floor, was quickly brought under control.

The hotel dates back to the mid 1920s. With 650 rooms, it is the largest SRO hotel in the country. Half of the tenants pay monthly rates, and the rest are subsidized via several programs.
