Labor unions agree to health givebacks

NEW YORK The deal with the Municipal Labor Committee will save the city $200 million in the fiscal year that begins next month. It will save $200 million the following year, and $150 million after that.

The savings comes through new co-payments for some services and changes to the funding structure for hospital claims, as well as other administrative measures.

Under the tentative agreement, the city has agreed to delay some of the scheduled layoffs for 90 days. That cost will be covered by a union fund that was created from collective bargaining settlements in the mid-1980s.

The agreement covers more than 550,000 employees and retirees.
