Voters fill 2 Bronx Assembly seats

June 2, 2009 8:34:23 PM PDT
Two New York Assembly staffers have succeeded their Democratic bosses in special elections in the Bronx, easily beating their challengers. Democrat Vanessa Gibson beat Conservative Joel Rivera and Republican Barbara Bowland in the 77th Assembly District, garnering 74.4 percent of the votes. The seat had been held by Democrat Aurelia Greene since 1982 in the Democrat-controlled Assembly.

In the 85th Assembly District, Democrat Marcos Crespo trounced Republican Leopold Paul, capturing 92.6 percent of the votes. The seat was held by Ruben Diaz Jr. since 1997.

Diaz was elected Bronx borough president in April and he picked Greene as his deputy. Diaz replaces Adolfo CarriDon, now President Barack Obama's urban policy director.

The 77th district covers Highbridge and Morrisania. The 85th district is the Soundview area.
