Teens with toy gun cause Princeton scare

PRINCETON, N.J. The message said there is a possible gunman on campus and advised people to stay in their buildings.

Princeton University Police got a call from a person on campus saying they saw a gunman near one of the dorms.

As it turns out, Princeton Borough Police Officer Garrett Brown says four juveniles were going through items discarded by Princeton students when they moved out of their dorms recently. Brown says they found the toy gun.

A witness saw one of the boys stick it in his waistband and thought it was real.

Brown says the boys did not realize they were causing an alarm.

They teens were questioned and released. It's not clear whether they're going to be charged.

Message to Students

At 11:25 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, Princeton University's Department of Public Safety has issued an all clear, and has reported there was no gunman on campus.

Campus community members should resume normal activities.

The continuing investigation is being conducted with Princeton Borough and Township police, and the Department of Public Safety has re-opened the campus. Shortly before 11 a.m., a male with what appeared to be a handgun was reported near the vicinity of Dod Hall dormitory.
