Torres reportedly snuck up on the 48-year-old victim, who was at the precinct to pick up an accident report.
Armed with an 11-inch knife, he stabbed the man in the back. When the victim turned and put up his arm to block the attack, he was slashed in the arm.
,p> Torres then walked into the police precinct, where police say he approached a female civilian employee at the front desk and threatened her. He then lunged at a male community affairs officer, who ordered Torres to drop the knife. He refused.As the suspect approached, the officer and two detectives opened fire, shooting five times. Torres was struck in the left arm and left chest.
He was rushed to New York Hospital Queens, where he was in stable condition. The stabbing victim was also in stable condition at the hospital.
The police officer and detectives who fired their weapons were being treated for trauma. The civilian employee, believed to be four months pregnant, was shaken up by the ordeal but not injured.
Charges against Torres are pending.
Detectives will interview the stabbing victim to determine a motive, but they believe it was an unprovoked attack.
Torres reportedly has two previous arrests for assault, including one against a police officer. Police searched his Northern Boulevard apartment for evidence.
