Little leaguer hit by stray bullet

BROOKLYN Andrea Walters says her 11-year-old son's head is wrapped in a bandage, but he is doing very well.

A cat scan showed that the bullet did no damage to his brain. In fact, he was awake through the whole ordeal and, if would you believe it, at first no one knew he had been hit by a bullet.

"All of a sudden, he screamed," Andrea Walters said.

Her son, Devonte Kelly, was getting ready to take his little league team picture when something everyone assumed it was a baseball hit him in the head. An ambulance rushed the boy to Brookdale Hospital.

"The doctor saw something on the left side. We took cat scan, and there was a bullet in his head," Walters said.

It lodged just under the scalp without penetrating the skull, but standing by her young son and hearing this news, Walters fell apart.

"I was crying so hard. I asked the doctor to hug me. I was very upset," she said.

Upset, too, that someone could fire a gun with more than 50 children around the field in Starret City. City Councilman Charles Barron calls it "sickening."

"If you don't want to snitch, tell me. I'll snitch because we are sick and tired of this," Barron said.

Walters has spoken to police and hopes someone offers information that produces the shooter. For now, though, she's immensely grateful that for all he went through, her son will heal.

"Thank God he's fine. He has an angel," Walters said.

Kelly will remain in the hospital for 3 to 4 days. He fully intends to return to his team. In fact, he wants to be a baseball player when he grows up, though his mother says that goal seems to change a fair amount.

No arrests were made.

Detectives believe the bullet traveled a long distance and increased the size of their canvas for evidence. They also went door to door, checking cameras and searching.
