In the end no one walked away from this one alive.
It was the blood curdling screams for help that prompted neighbors to call police at around 8:30 Monday morning.
When officers arrived, Daryl Elder, 37, of Union, New Jersey initially would not let them into the condo unit, resulting in a 30 minute standoff.
But time was of the essence; police forced open the door and found Tawanna Grant, 34, covered in blood in the kitchen and her boyfriend wildly swinging two knives.
As they got Grant out, Elder tried to jump out of a rear window and when that failed, he turned on officers.
"He cursed a couple of times at the officers when officers ordered him to cease. When he attempted to throw the knife with his right hand -- as soon as he did that, he took two shots," said attorney Patrick Toscano.
The bullets fatally struck the suspect in the chest. The officer who fired the shots has been with the department for 21 years. This was the first time he has ever used his weapon.
"He's hanging in there. This was a tragic moment. When something like this happens, the priority is the officers and everyone else at the scene," said Chief Kurt Dombrowski of the Caldwell Police Department.
