Falling commodities prices had spooked investors earlier Monday, but prices for key industrial materials closed off their lows for the day.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow is up 1 at 8,764. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 1 at 939. The Nasdaq is down 7 at 1,842.
Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to a relatively light 1.1 billion shares.
