June 9, 2009 12:32:35 PM PDT
A despondent man apparently committed suicide after barricading himself inside his car, sparking a standoff that closed the Meadowbrook Parkway. Police say the man was observed holding a gun in his car, pulled over onto the shoulder south of Merrick Road in Merrick.

State police responded, closing the parkway in both directions just before 10 a.m.

Officers attempted to talk to the 37-year-old Oceanside man, while keeping an armed proximity around the vehicle. After more than two hours, shots were fired inside the car.

The troopers approached and discovered the man dead, an apparent suicide.

The man was apparently despondent over an ongoing family matter. His name was not released.

The Meadowbrook Parkway was reopened shortly before 3 p.m.
