Plus-sized yoga classes

If you've never done yoga, walking into a new class can be intimidating, even more so if you look different than everyone else. That's why more places are gearing yoga classes to plus-sized individuals.

The classes are challenging in ways yoga classes can be, but for many women and men, the classes are also comforting. There's a feeling of not just belonging, but of being understood.

At Sun Salutations in Bryant Park, Megan Garcia is guiding her student through Mega Yoga.

It's a program from full-bodied, curvy women, like Bernadette Beekman, who is a size 16.

"As you know, this modification is good for those of us with ample bust," she said.

The practice is just like that of other yoga classes, but with modifications that address size.

It was a similar story for Michael Hayes. He started his Buddha Body yoga classes because he saw and felt a need.

Making yoga to fit different body types helps make students feel like they fit in.

"It really just comes down to the fact that he takes the time to adapt to body types," one student said.

And when those bodies get into a pose in ways they never did before, it's a moment.

"Once I see them get it," Hayes said. "It makes my day."

And it's satisfying for the students, whether they're doing the yoga to de-stress or get in shape.

And fortunately, these classes cost the same as most other yoga classes.
