Multi-vehicle crash injures 9 in NJ

NEWARK It was a mangled mess of twisted metal and shattered glass.

The intersection of Haynes Avenue in Newark looked more like the aftermath of a demolition derby in the early morning hours.

"It looked pretty bad," said Louis Sacca, who owns D and V Auto Body.

On a scale of one to ten, he said the crash that happened just feet from his shop was a 10.

Newark police say around 2:00 wednesday morning two cars came speeding north up Frelinghuysen Avenue unaware of the three cars sitting at a light ahead.

There was no chance of stopping in time. The result was catastrophic.

It was a 5 car pile up. Some of the cars almost torn in half and all of them destroyed.

Police say you can see evidence of the high rate of speed in the wreckage. One backseat took the brunt of the crash. A child's car seat, under the weight of the trunk, was pushed up into it.

With the exception of one unidentified driver and his passenger who remained in critical condition, officials said none of the others involved sustained serious or life threatening injuries and have all since been treated and released.

Rayquan Horton, 24, of Irvington was detained at the scene of the accident and was later charged with DWI.

According to preliminary reports, police said all involved in the accident were coming from the same night club in Elizabeth. One of the two vehicles observed travelling at a high rate of speed was driven by Horton, police said.

The two speeding vehicles apparently collided near the intersection of Frelinghuysen/Haynes Avenues before striking the three cars already waiting at the traffic signal at the intersection.

It appears that some of those involved in the accident were acquainted with one another however the exact relationships have not been determined.
