Newark raises parking fines

June 18, 2009 7:27:55 AM PDT
Motorists who illegally park will face higher fines in New Jersey's largest city. The Newark City Council raised the penalty for violations to $45 to raise revenue and help offset a projected budget deficit. That's a $20 increase for those who park at an expired meter.

Free holiday parking rules will remain in effect. The council feared eliminating the privilege would hurt downtown businesses.
