Off-duty cop killed in LIE crash

LONG ISLAND Authorities say 34-year-old Robert Bowen lost control of his 1994 BMW east of Exit 57, ripping off a large stretch of guardrail just before 4:30 a.m.

The vehicle flipped onto the roadway. Bowen, who was assigned to the Suffolk County Police Department's third precinct, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation closed the eastbound Long Island Expressway for several exits.

Meanwhile, two separate accidents and a car fire closed westbound lanes through the area. All westbound lane closures were cleared and traffic is back to normal.

Eastbound lanes were closed at Exit 55 and westbound lanes were closed at Exit 58.
