Police, suspects crash in Newark

NEWARK, N.J.

According to investigators, detectives in the East Orange Violent Crimes task force observed a vehicle fitting the description of a car that was carjacked out of Newark on June 19. They ran the plates and it came back matching that vehicle.

The detectives pursued the vehicle into Newark where both cars were involved in a crash at Elizabeth Avenue and East Peddie Street.

Two East Orange police officers were taken to University Hospital.

A detective was listed in serious condition with a fractured hip and a broken arm.

The other officer was treated and released.

Two suspects were arrested at the scene, officials said. It was not immediately known if they were injured.
