HEMPSTEAD, Long Island --
Police on Long Island have arrested the mother of a newborn found abandoned in a shoebox in the lobby of a Long island apartment building. Nassau County Police on Wednesday charged 25-year-old Xiomara Gamez
, of Hempstead, with reckless endangerment, abandonment of child, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Gamez is to be arraigned on Thursday. Police did not know if she had a lawyer.
The healthy, newborn girl was discovered by a resident on Sunday.
The Hempstead building lobby is not a safe haven. The city's safe haven law allows babies to be left within five days of birth at a police station, firehouse or hospital.
