LI police arrest abandoned baby's mom

June 25, 2009 6:21:13 AM PDT
Police on Long Island have arrested the mother of a newborn found abandoned in a shoebox in the lobby of a Long island apartment building. Nassau County Police on Wednesday charged 25-year-old Xiomara Gamez, of Hempstead, with reckless endangerment, abandonment of child, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Gamez is to be arraigned on Thursday. Police did not know if she had a lawyer.

The healthy, newborn girl was discovered by a resident on Sunday.

The Hempstead building lobby is not a safe haven. The city's safe haven law allows babies to be left within five days of birth at a police station, firehouse or hospital.
