The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has also raised the price of a weekly unlimited Metrocard from $25 to $27. A monthly card has gone from $81 to $89.
The MTA was poised to raise fares by twice as much before the state Legislature approved a bailout.
The $2.25 fare was seen as a reasonable compromise, though it won't last. Increases averaging 7.5 percent are anticipated for 2011 and 2013.
