NYC transit fare hike takes effect

June 29, 2009 4:01:27 AM PDT
Taking the train? It'll cost you - more. A fare hike that takes the price of a subway ride from $2 to $2.25 has gone into effect.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has also raised the price of a weekly unlimited Metrocard from $25 to $27. A monthly card has gone from $81 to $89.

The MTA was poised to raise fares by twice as much before the state Legislature approved a bailout.

The $2.25 fare was seen as a reasonable compromise, though it won't last. Increases averaging 7.5 percent are anticipated for 2011 and 2013.
