Authorities in northern New Jersey are searching for an inmate who escaped from a work detail Monday. Phillip Ruddy was a trustee at the Union County Jail.

Authorities say the 21-year-old took off while removing trash in Elizabeth just after midnight.

Authorities say Ruddy was jailed on a parole violation June 1 and was considered a low-risk inmate.

A spokesman for the Union County Prosecutor's Office says Ruddy is from Rahway.
