NEWARK Police say the pursuit began in Belleville after officers observed someone breaking into a car.

In Newark, when the chase reached a dead end, the suspects turned the car around tried to flee. Authorities say a Belleville police officer was struck by the fleeing vehicle. As the car sped towards him, police say the officer fired one single shot from his service weapon, hitting the driver in the head.

The vehicle struck a tree and passenger Japhet Lopez was arrested after a short chase. Police are searching for a third suspect.

The police officer, who has not been named, is in stable condition with shoulder and arm injuries.
