Separate accidents on the water in Columbia and Cromwell have claimed two lives. Authorities say 50-year-old Anthony Varricchio Jr. died after falling into the Connecticut River in Cromwell Saturday afternoon.

Police chief Anthony Salvatore says divers found Varricchio about a half hour after he fell off a dock. Rescue workers were not able to resuscitate him.

Volunteer firefighters pulled 85-year-old Henry Galan of Columbia from about 10-feet of water in Columbia Lake Saturday morning. They performed CPR on the scene and Galan was taken to Windham Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
