NY man drowns off Fire Island

July 19, 2009 7:27:08 PM PDT
Police on Long Island say a Queens man wading in waters off Fire Island drowned after a current pulled him away from shore. Police say 22-year-old Rahul Bhola was in chest deep water with a friend off Cherry Grove early Saturday night when it happened.

His friend tried to help him but was unsuccessful. There were no lifeguards on the beach in the area and the water was reported to be rough.

Members of the Cherry Grove Fire Department and lifeguards from nearby Sailors Haven searched for Bhola and found him out about a half hour later.

He was taken to Stony Brook Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
