Man killed while coming to brother's aid

NEW YORK "You know what it means to have a reason to look at your friend that you've been living with for about 15 year, lying on the ground, arms folded, with blood," Jacob Adams said.

He is still trying to come to grips with the brutal murder of his long-time friend and landlord.

Sidney Baxter, 51, was shot to death right outside his home on Sunday night.

Police say a gunman first approached the victim's brother, Eric, in the driveway demanding money.

Eric ran into the house, yelling for his brother to call 911.

Instead, Sidney apparently pushed Eric from the doorway and headed outside. The gunman shot and killed him.

"It's sad. Very sad," neighbor Edna Sterling said.

Sterling, who lives next door, said she heard the gunshots, but didn't know until later someone had been killed.

As police search for the gunman responsible, she no longer feels safe in her own neighborhood.

"I have a garden and I'm scared to go in my garden. I don't know what to do. I'm scared," she said.

Eric Baxter was too distraught to talk about his brother, but Jacob Adams freely remembered the man he's called "friend" for decades.

"Very intelligent. Hard working. When he goes after something, he never stops until he gets it," Adams said.
