Allen is already trying to tackle her back to school shopping list. She has two daughters who lost their jobs this year and four grandchildren to buy for.
"The economy has made things so bad, you have to get it when you can afford to," she said.
According to a new survey released by the New York-based company Deloitte, 32 percent of consumers say they're saving more this year on back-to-school items. That's up 10 percent from last year. Twenty-two percent are spending less because of a job loss.
Consumers say they are pulling out all the stops to save money, from discount shopping to buying just the basics.
