Final farewell to Jersey City detective

JERSEY CITY It was a moving, emotional service.

The church was packed with family with his wife and three young children sitting in the front row.

The 37-year-old was shot in the face storming an apartment on July 16. Four other police officers were wounded in the gun battle and two armed robbery suspects were killed.

DiNardo was taken off life support and pronounced dead on Tuesday, one day before his 38th birthday.

Among the mourners was Michael Camacho, who was shot in neck in the same shoot out which claimed the life of Detective DiNardo. Camacho came by an ambulance to say good bye to his friend.

Many were overcome with emotion inside and St. Aedan's Catholic Church. Father Kevin Carter says the best way to remember the fallen officer is to be willing to give.

The tears were even flowing out on the street as mourners came to pay their respects. Bagpipes skirled and hundreds of law enforcement officers saluted as DiNardo's flag-draped coffin was carried from the church.

Thousands of officers lined the streets in tribute to Detective Mark DiNardo. It was just proof of the impact, this fallen cop had on so many.
