New parking spaces fuel confusion

FOREST HILLS Virtually every driver had a problem parking, not realizing the parking lines have actually been re-drawn at the opposite angle making the routine of pulling in head-on nearly impossible.

Drivers now have to pull ahead of the spot. Stop. Put the car in reverse, and then reverse to park within the lines easily.

The State Department of Transportation calls it a safety improvement to have better control when exiting the parking spot.

Drivers call it something else!

"It's stupid!" one exclaimed.

Adding to the confusion, here are all the signs? There are all kinds of signs in the city telling people to do things, but nothing here telling people to reverse park.

Some drivers realize the angle discourages the old way of pulling straight in, so they're breaking the law anyway -- crossing double lines to assure they can just drive up to the spot.

Like it or not, parking in reverse is now a law on 108th Street. The DOT says expect the signs to go up in the next few days. They say old habits die hard, but old habits once the signs go up will cost drivers. They will get tickets for parking the wrong way.
