NYPD fatally shoot armed man

August 1, 2009 7:41:18 PM PDT
An armed man who shot at uniformed officers on a New York City street was hit once and later died as cops returned fire. Two police officers on patrol were flagged down by pedestrians in the Bronx early Saturday who said there was a man with a gun nearby. At the same time, several 911 calls were placed. Two other officers also responded.

Officials say the four officers found the 31-year-old suspect carrying a semiautomatic handgun and ordered him to drop the weapon. Police say the man instead turned and opened fire. Police returned fire, striking him once in the chest.

He was taken to an area hospital where he later died. His name wasn't released. It's not clear how many shots were fired.
