Lifeguard with headphones investigated

New York City's Parks Department has started an investigation after a lifeguard was photographed wearing music headphones - a practice that could keep him from hearing a cry for help. The New York Post published the photo Monday, showing a lifeguard with his ears completely covered by headphones. It was taken Sunday at Rockaway Beach. On Saturday, a teenager drowned in a riptide along a different stretch of the beach in Queens.

Parks spokesman Phil Abramson says lifeguards are not allowed to wear headphones while on duty. He says the department will investigate and take disciplinary action if warranted.

Rockaways resident Anthony Colella told the Post that he has seen lifeguards wearing headphones in the past. He says he's also seen them talking on their cell phones and texting.
