Neighbors apparently thought they were hearing fireworks.
When police arrived they observed Thomas Keating, 56, standing on the front steps of 11 1st St. in Bellport Village.
According to police, Keating was armed with what appeared to be an automatic weapon.
Suffolk police say they ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but the man ran inside the house instead.
Keating returned moments later, but this time the gun was reportedly pointed at police.
Shots were apparently fired by police and Keating was pronounced dead on the front porch.
Police say a weapon, a replica of an Uzi submachine gun was recovered at the scene.
The investigation is continuing. Police are looking into whether or not this was a case of suicide by cop.
