NYPD: Child critical after drag race

QUEENS Avi Babayeva is in critical condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell following the Wednesday night crash in the Fresh Meadows section of Queens.

  • SLIDES: Images from the scene

Babayeva was in the back seat of a 2004 gray BMW that clipped a 2009 Lexus on Francis Lewis Boulevard just before 11 p.m.

Investigators believe the vehicles, operated by teen cousins, were drag racing at a high rate of speed on the straightaway.

The collision sent the BMW spinning out of control and crashing into a parked white van.

Emergency workers cut Babayeva out of the crushed wreckage.

The driver and front passenger of the BMW, identified as 18-years-old David Badalov and 18-year-old Ilya Iskhakova, were also rescued and rushed to New York Hospital Queens, where they are in stable condition.

The 16-year-old driver of the Lexus, David Lakhochkova, emerged from his vehicle uninjured.

He was overheard denying he was drag racing as he was interviewed by police officers at the scene.

He was taken to a nearby police precinct, where he was charged with vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, reckless assault and speeding. He was also charged with unlicensed driver, because at 16, he is not allowed to drive alone.

Badalov was charged with vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, reckless assault and speeding.

The parents of 16-year-old Lakhochkova were not charged, pending continued investigation by the Queens District Attorney's Office.
