Keith Calhoun was with friends at 12th Avenue and 7th Street at 2:30 Monday morning.
Investigators said two males came up, and a heated exchange ignited. One shot was fired and Calhoun, just 14, went down.
He was shot in the back. Calhoun died before dawn.
Calhoun became a Blood when he was 11-years old, his mother said.
Abdul Muhammad, one of Newark's anti-violence activists, says it's all too easy for urban teens to slip into gang activity at age 11 and even younger.
