Robbery turns deadly in Kearny

KEARNY The incident happened just before 9 a.m. along Kearny Avenue and Liberty Street at Rachel Jewelers, a family-owned business.

Police received a call that shots had been fired. Workers at the deli next door were alerted that there was trouble, and they went over. That's when they say they found the owner's son, Javier Egoavil, who had been shot several times.

Now, officers are trying to piece together what happened.

There was at least one witness who told police she saw two men running from the store. The description is very vague. One appears to be white and the other Middle Eastern.

The jewerly store owner was reportedly getting coffee in the pastry shop three doors down when he got the devastating news.

As police officers converged on the scene, relatives and friends also rushed to the tiny store to learn that the worst had happened.

Cheryl Oliviera grew up with the victim.

"Wonderful father, wonderful human being," she said. "His father was like my dad."

The Egoavil family has reportedly owned a business along Kearny Street since the 1970s. Honorio Egoavil owns Rachel Jewelers, but his wife and son often worked by his side.

Investigators are hoping information from witnesses and perhaps video from area security cameras will help lead them to the suspects.

"They are really good people," family friend Desiree Colon said. "I feel so bad for them. I really do."
