DWI driver pleads guilty in livery crash

NEW YORK Daryush Omar entered the plea Wednesday in a Queens court. The 25-year-old expects up to 10 1/2 years in prison at his sentencing, set for Sept. 9.

Omar admitted he was drunk when he smashed into a livery cab on Nov. 16, killing cab driver Bessy Velasquez and Panayiota Demetriou, a graduate student from Cyprus. Demetriou was only weeks away from getting her doctorate in psychology.

Omar had previously been charged with murder in a Manhattan case that stalled but remains open. He also had been ordered deported but released from immigration detention because of time limits.
