New York City closed its 14 miles of Atlantic beaches to swimming, even wading in the water, but surfers? Well, they hit the beach, hopped their boards, and trusted their experience.
State parks official George Gorman says churning seas and the morning high tide flooded the sand Saturday morning at Robert Moses State Park on Fire Island. The beach is expected to reopen for sunbathing in the afternoon.
Gorman says roughly 10-foot waves are pouring onto the beach.
Beaches closed to swimmers - but open for sunbathing - include Jones Beach, Rockaway Beach and Coney Island Beach.
But the danger isn't only the height of the waves, it's the undercurrent.
So until hurricane bill blows by, city officials will continue to raise the red flag.
