LYNBROOK, NY --
Instead of being punished for staying out late, two Long Island teenagers are being praised for helping a couple escape from their burning home. Hewlett teens Gideon Stryker and Jacob Kayen had gone sightseeing and to the movies in Manhattan on Sunday, and didn't get back to Long Island until the next morning at about 1:30 a.m.
The 15-year-olds were walking home from the Lynbrook train station when they saw a house fire. Stryker called 911 and Kayen banged on the door, waking the couple.
Nassau fire officials on Monday credited their quick actions with saving the unidentified couple's lives.
Kayen says his mother was going to ground him for getting home late, but that she has changed her mind.
