The fashion industry in New York employs 175,000 people and generates $10 billion in wages. That's a big chunk, and those in the fashion industry are hoping to keep the numbers up despite what's been a terrible economy. And that's what Fashion's Night Out is all about.
Oscar de la Renta is gearing up for his Fashion Week runway show, but he's also getting ready to party at his Madison Avenue shop along with you and some of his favorite friends.
He's planning a duet with Barbara Walters, and he says Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker may also be there. So why the celebration?
"Our industry is having a difficult time," he said.
And he's not the only one trying to change the mood, but also the spending habits. He and other designers are hoping to make shopping fun again.
Fashion's Night Out is taking place at more than 700 stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue.
And while you're out shopping for that gown, grab a special T-shirt. Forty percent of the proceeds benefit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, which is finally taking shape.
Money raised from the sale of the T-shirts will go toward the creation of the exhibits within the museum.
Now you just have to head out Thursday, perhaps singing along with Oscar while you shop.
"It's going to be a party not only at my store, but across the five boroughs," he said.
The T-shirts cost $30, and they're available at a number of stores. Fashion's Night Out is Thursday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, visit FashionsNightOut.com.
