The LIRR fired an engineer for allowing allowed a passenger to operate a rush-hour train in July. Ronald Cabrera's termination follows a two-month internal disciplinary review by the LIRR.

Eyewitness News is told the 40-year-old Cabrera's failed "to protect passengers, the public, his fellow employees and himself by allowing an unqualified individual to operate his train."

Under Cabrera's union contract, he has a right to further appeals, including a hearing with an arbitrator who could uphold his firing or order his reinstatement.
