Victim was identified as 22-year-old Christopher Caddell of 135 Willard Avenue, Staten Island.
Investigators said Caddell has a couple prior arrests for marijuana, nothing more serious.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said it appears Caddell was struck in the head by an unknown person.
He said the cause of death appears to be blunt trauma to the head. The Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy today.
