"It didn't do it, the one thing it was supposed to do in this world, which was stick." A frustrated Jason Lehrhoff is fed up with his car's registration sticker. "I just put some scotch tape on both sides."
But, without the tape, the sticker peeled off. Jason says it fell on the dashboard below. "The registration sticker was just laying on the air vent, on the dash board. It was in plain sight you could read everything off it."
But that didn't stop Jason from getting stuck (so to speak) with two tickets. Both cited him for having a missing registration sticker. Both cost him $65 apiece. "I requested a web hearing, and that came back guilty."
7 On Your Side's Tappy Phillips took a stroll down Jason's street. And there they were, car after car, with registration stickers peeling off windshields.
It turns out the New York DMV had gotten a bad batch of registration stickers with glue that didn't stick. And they had sent out a notice earlier this year to law enforcement, to be a little lenient.
The press release notified law enforcement to use their "discretion" when they see "loose or taped stickers."
"They urged the police to be lenient and they weren't in this case and they didn't hear my story," said the frustrated motorist. "I sent them the press release with my rebuttal."
Jason appealed the ruling and was awaiting a decision. Meanwhile, we took his case to the NYC'S Department of Finance.
And a few days later, Jason got a notice reversing the decision. His 2 payments would be returned.
No explanation. Just a reversal of the charge.
