Murder mystery at Midtown hotel

Investigators search for the person who fatally stabbed a woman inside one of the city's grand old hotels. The body of the woman has been found inside her apartment at the Essex House hotel.

Police say her throat had apparently been slashed.

The Essex House is located along Central Park south.

Sources described the woman as being in her 30s. She was found inside the 78-year-old building that houses both hotels and multi-million dollar condos.

Crime scene investigators grabbed evidence bags and hauled equipment to the Essex House murder around 8 p.m.

Sources tell Eyewitness News that a maid found the woman in an apartment on the 10th floor.

She notified security, who then called police at around 3 p.m. Saturday.

Law enforcement officials say cops found her naked body face down with a kitchen knife stuck in her neck.

She also reportedly had jogging pants wrapped around her neck.

"It's scary it's really scary I wouldn't expect that in a place like this." tenant resident Alanna Febian.

The Essex House is fully cooperating with police and providing surveillance video.

At first glance detectives don't see any signs of forced entry -- meaning the victim may have know her killer.

"It's a little alarming and there's a lot of interesting people who stay in this hotel. I saw Latoya Jackson today. It's not usual," hotel guest Katherine Regehr says.

Police continue to investigate and look into who would kill this woman.

The hotel opened in 1931. It's near upscale shops on Fifth Avenue and Broadway.
