Police crack down on illegal bike rentals

NEW YORK Since August, police have nabbed a dozen vendors for renting bicycles on sidewalks. Another 25 people were issued summonses for illegal storage of bikes.

Police say they've seized 73 bikes rented to unsuspecting tourists for as much as $20 an hour.

Police say they've received hundreds of complaints about bikes chained to construction scaffolding and utility poles.

Complainants say the bikes clutter sidewalks and that illegal vendors rent the bikes without helmets.
