NYC begins licensing pedicabs

NEW YORK The city's Department of Consumer Affairs said on Sunday that it has begun accepting license applications from pedicab business owners. The deadline to submit applications is Nov. 20.

The goal is to limit the number of licensed pedicab businesses to the number of applications received by that date.

Pedicabs resemble human-powered tricycles with passenger compartments. They began appearing on the city's streets in the mid-1990s.

While subject to traffic rules for bicycles, it wasn't until June that the city and pedicab business owners agreed to further regulate the industry.

Pedicab operators must also obtain driver licenses under the new rules.
