Source: Midtown stabbing suspect found dead

MIDTOWN The official said the suspect had been tracked to Philadelphia with the help of family members. He was discovered Tuesday night.

No other details were immediately available.

Earlier Tuesday, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly identified the suspect as 28-year-old Sirmone McCaulla. The break in the case apparently came thanks to photos taken by a German tourist, who witnessed the Sunday attack and instinctively snapped pictures of the suspect.

McCaulla served in the military in Kuwait. Police say he had three prior arrests.

Eyewitness News is told an NYPD officer unrelated to the case happened to see the photos and identified the suspect. Kelly said three people also called in to CrimeStoppers to identify the suspect.

He was accused of stabbing 20-year-old Christopher Gutierrez during a chance altercation along Eighth Avenue near West 33rd Street around 5:45 Sunday afternoon.

Police say Gutierrez may have accidentally bumped into his killer. Witnesses said the two men started arguing, and at some point the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed Gutierrez twice. The suspect then calmly walked away, witnesses said.

Gutierrez's funeral will be held at Ortiz Funeral Home on First Avenue in the East Village. Arrangements are pending.
