Officers suspended after deadly DWI

BROOKLYN Officer Andrew Kelly, who was charged in a drunk driving crash that killed a pedestrian, and Officer Michael Downs, who was in the vehicle at the time of the crash and left the scene, have been suspended, officials said on Monday.

Kelly is assigned to the 68th Precinct in Brooklyn. Downs is assigned to the 70th Precinct, also in Brooklyn.

Investigators said Kelly stuck and killed a 33-year-old pastor's daughter, who was crossing the street.

The accident happened just after 1:00 on Sunday morning at East 56th Street and Avenue N.

The victim was identified as Vionique Valnord, of Brooklyn. She was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Kelly, 30, was off-duty at the time. He was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI.

Kelly was freed on $200,000 bail.
