National Eating Disorders Association

Across the nation, nearly 10-million women and one-million men are either anorexic or bulimic. Another 15-million people have binge eating disorders. The National Eating Disorders Association works to promote education and raise awareness. Lynn Grefe, the CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association and Sara Pollan, who has recovered from an eating disorder, joined us. How extensive are eating disorders and how serious?

They are very serious; and life threatening; Anorexia has the highest death rate of any mental illness. The physical complications can be terrible,. Early osteoporosis, reproductive health problems, kidney or heart failure, problems with the esophagus etc.

Are these mental or physical illnesses?

They show themselves in both ways, but they are biologically based - people born with the gun, life pulls the trigger...

What are the challenges?

Getting insurance coverage for care; lack of research; lack of education and strong prevention programs

We all are getting together to promote education and raise awareness - and help raise funds for our programs -- in NYC's Riverside Park for our first ever WALK - October 11th.

We hope people will join us! Visit our website or come out that day. Our website is www.nationaleatingdisorders.org.
