Newark chase ends in cop car crash

NEWARK The incident happened in the westbound lanes around 4:45 p.m.

According to the preliminary accounts, Newark police attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop when the driver sped off.

The vehicle, occupied by two suspects, led police on a pursuit onto Route 280 eastbound towards Kearny, at which time Newark police terminated the pursuit. Kearny and state police picked up the pursuit in Kearny, subsequently pursuing the vehicle back into Newark on Route 280 westbound.

Investigators said In the area of Route 280 and Orange Street, the suspect vehicle struck a Newark police car, injuring one officer.

The suspect vehicle continued to elude police and was recovered a short time later at 594 S. 13th Street, where both suspects fled the scene on foot into Westside Park, police said.

Rescue crews rushed the injured officer to the hospital with minor leg injuries.

Police were questioning one man and still searching for another late Monday night.

Authorities reopened I-280 a few hours later.
