Cops: Man tries to light girlfriend on fire

INWOOD Police say Danny Gonzales, of 385 Bayview Avenue, became involved in a dispute with his girlfriend while at her Inwood residence Friday night.

Gonzales allegedly grabbed his girlfriend around the neck and began to strangle her. The victim, feeling she could not breathe, managed to break away, run to a bedroom and attempt to use the phone to call police. When Gonzales ripped the phone cable from the wall, police say the victim ran to her car to get her cell phone.

Gonzales reportedly followed the victim outside, doused her with gasoline and threw a lit cigarette on her. As she tried to flee, Gonzales allegedly tried to stop her by tripping her.

The victim, who was able to reach a neighbor to call police, suffered a burn to her foot, for which she did not seek immediate medical assistance.

Gonzales was charged with attempted arson, attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and menacing.
