New Lincoln Center anniversary exhibit

NEW YORK There have been celebrations throughout the year to mark the groundbreaking in 1959. And right now, there's a free exhibit at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, located right at Lincoln Center.

"The real challenge was there was so much to choose from," Thomas Mellins said.

Mellins had to sift through warehouses packed with items from Lincoln Center's 50-year history. There were photos, props, models and memorabilia. And now, they're all on display.

There's the seating chart for opening night and snippets of performances to watch and listen to.

You can see a set designed by Maurice Sendack, the children's book illustrator. Who knew he did opera?

There, you'll also see what Lincoln Center never became, as well as images of what it will soon become once its overhaul is complete.

The story of the performing arts institution comes to life on 16 acres that put New York on the cultural map. Its architecture inspired fashions, and its artistry inspired generations.

The exhibit runs from October 15 through January 6, 2010. The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is located at 40 Lincoln Center Plaza. The hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from noon to 8 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
