The fire broke out on the sixth floor of 605 West 141st Street just before midnight.
Police identified the victim as 83-year-old Ida Castro. The elderly woman lived in the apartment by herself.
Several residents were temporarily evacuated from the apartment building, but were not injured.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is not considered suspicious.
A firefighter suffered a minor injury.
